Avoiding Fragility Fractures - Your Life May Depend on It
More than 353,000 people are hospitalized for hip fractures each year. The total cost in medical bills and lost income resulting from hip fractures is more than $12.6 billion a year or an average of $37,000 per hip fracture. Close to ninety percent of hip fractures are among persons 65 and older. Women over age 65 have a one in five chance of having a hip fracture during their lifetime.

Who is vulnerable to a fragility fracture?

Age. The rate increases for people 65 and older.

Gender. Women have two to three times as many hip fractures as men.

Heredity. A family history of fractures in later life, particularly in Caucasians and Asians.

A small-boned, slender body.

Nutrition. A low calcium dietary intake or reduced ability to absorb calcium.

Personal habits. Smoking or excessive alcohol use.

Physical impairments. Physical frailty, arthritis, unsteady balance and poor eyesight.

Mental impairments. Senility, dementia, e.g., Alzheimer's disease.

Weakness or dizziness from side effects of medication.

Reducing Your Risk of Fractures

Get regular exercise. Try walking, swimming, or weight training.

Make your home safe to avoid accidents.

Eat foods that are rich in calcium, or take calcium supplements.

Things to Avoid

Alcohol is toxic to bones. It is a major cause of bone loss. Heavy drinking can cause osteoporosis even if you have no other risk factors.

Smoking reduces bone mass. Smoking may also interfere with estrogen levels and cause early menopause.

Inactivity makes your bones lose strength and become thinner. Over time, thin bones may break. Women who aren't active are at a high risk for osteoporosis.

Certain medications such as cortisone increase bone loss. They also decrease bone growth. Ask your healthcare provider about any side effects of your medications.

Protein-rich or salty foods eaten in large amounts may deplete calcium.

Caffeine increases calcium loss. People who drink a lot of coffee, tea, or colas lose more calcium than those who don't.

Northeast Baptist Hospital is committed to helping prevent fragility falls. Here are some of the steps they take for our patients in the hospital:

Check vitamin D and calcium levels

Give 50,000 IU of vitamin D immediately to all elderly patients

Prescribe calcium (1200 mg daily)

Prescribe vitamin D (minimum of 1000 IU daily) upon discharge from the hospital

Refer to Physical Medicine or Physical Therapy for fall-prevention education

Refer for a home-safety check

Include a plan to identify causes of osteoporosis, obtain bone density testing, and initiate osteoporosis medications if appropriate

Considering a knee or hip replacement? Joint Replacement Clubs make the process much easier. Baptist Health System has Center of Excellence Joint Clubs at Northeast and St. Luke's Baptist Hospitals. Now North Central Baptist Hospital is offering Joint Club for all patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

Patients get to meet other people also undergoing the procedure, go through educational classes together and even rehab together. Going through the process with others has been shown to help patients recover faster and easier.

The new classes at North Central Baptist Hospital are offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to Noon in Atrium Classrooms 1 A&B. Patients are encouraged to bring a family member or friend to the class as their "coach."

For more information, call 297-7005 or visit

Stone Oak "Bones Up" With New Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon

Pretty much every kid has suffered a bump, bruise, strain or pain at some time or another resulting from a sports injury, horseplay or a minor accident. But when things are more serious, it's nice to know that Elizabeth Magnabosco, M.D. is now practicing in the Stone Oak area. Dr. Magnabosco is a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. When she's not at

North Central Baptist Hospital

doing surgery, she sees between 30 and 50 children a day at her office, treating everything from congenital developmental issues like scoliosis, to trauma, sports injuries and more.

"The number one question I get from parents is, 'How do I know if my child needs to be seen by a doctor?' says Dr. Magnabosco. "I tell parents, if it's crooked or bleeding, go to the ER. On the other hand, if a couple of days have passed, and they can move their fingers but can't lean on the arm, they need to be seen by a doctor."

Dr. Magnabosco decided to go into the pediatric subspecialty of orthopedics because she loves taking care of kids. A mom of two young children herself, she says her patients can turn a bad day around for her. "If I'm having bad day, as soon as I start seeing patients it gets better. They're silly and funny, and they want to get better. I treat every family how I would want to be treated if it was one of my kids - and it all works out."

Dr. Magnabosco also enjoys seeing a wide variety of cases and the immediate results that are possible in orthopedic surgery. "In adult orthopedic surgery everything is pretty specialized. You see a shoulder specialist for a shoulder injury, a hip specialist or knee specialist for each particular disease or injury. But in pediatric orthopedics you take care of all sorts of problems."

A typical day is hardly typical for Dr. Magnabosco. Surgery days start at 7:30 a.m. in the operating room. She may do one long scoliosis spinal fusion or six separate cases in a day. On clinic days she does rounds in the hospital, then goes to the office to see patients from nine to noon, eats lunch at her desk while doing paperwork, returning calls and going over imaging reports, then it's back to seeing patients, sometimes until 6pm. In between all that - she sees patients in the emergency room at North Central Baptist Hospital when needed. After hours she is often on call for unexpected emergencies or follow-up.

Originally from Southern California, Dr. Magnabosco says she got to Texas as fast as she could. She earned her undergraduate degree at UCLA, attended medical school in Chicago, completed her Internship and Residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and accomplished a Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedics and Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite in Dallas. After being in private practice for ten years, Dr. Magnabosco decided to join the Baptist Physicians Network.

Her new office, Pediatric Orthopedics at Stone Oak, is located at 19026 Stone Oak Parkway, Suite 100. Because she is able to do X-Rays in the office, many patients can be taken care of in one stop, rather than going to an urgent care setting, then to the pediatrician and ultimately to the orthopedic surgeon.

A New Option for People with Knee Pain

Baptist Health System-affiliated orthopedic surgeon David Fox, M.D., and patient Karen Camargo are all smiles knowing that Carmago can keep dancing with a new knee implant designed to last twice as long as previous implants.

Recent advances by researchers have opened a new chapter in high-performance knee replacement surgery. The world's first knee implant tested to simulate 30 years of wear was just approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April of this year and is being used at Northeast Baptist Hospital.

"After 10 to 15 years, a common issue with knee replacements is what surgeons refer to as 'wear,' which can often result in the need for a second knee replacement," says orthopedicsurgeon David Fox, M.D. "This new implant gives patients the confidence that they are not going to need another surgery."

The Legion Knee with Verilast Technology has been tested to last more than twice the length of knee replacements made with traditional materials. 53-year-old Karen Camargo, a former sheriff's deputy, recently had knee replacement surgery at Northeast Baptist Hospital. She had been injured in a car accident while on duty in 1986, and over the years the pain got worse and her mobility was seriously diminished. Camargo's surgeon used the Legion implant because she is so young.

"I had gone to another orthopedist who told me that I was too young to have a knee replacement, so I was stuck just living with the pain and the fact that I couldn't do many of the things I love anymore, like dancing," says Camargo. "Some coworkers told me about Dr. Fox, so I went to see him and was so pleased that he was not only able to get rid of my pain, but get me back to dancing again . and not just for 10 years, but for 30!"

Camargo says she never had any pain after surgery, "except when I did it to myself by going so hard in physical therapy." She says the hospital experience was kind of like a party. "The nurses would come into my room at night and just hang out. We laughed and I even got some of their e-mail addresses so we can stay in touch."

What's next for Camargo? "Well, I'm going to get the other knee done next. But first I'm going to do a lot of dancing and get back to the gym and work out again. My daughter is in the Air Force stationed in Germany, and I haven't seen her for two years. She's coming home soon, and I can't wait for her to see the new me."

Learn More About 30 Year Legion Knee with Verilast Technology

Baptist Health System Awarded Gold Seal of Approval

The Joint Clubs at Northeast Baptist and St. Luke's Baptist hospitals are the first orthopedic programs in San Antonio to earn the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission, the nation's largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. The Center of Excellence designation is for quality care in total knee and hip replacement.

Why is Joint Club so effective for patients? An emphasis on educating patients before their surgery prepares them for exactly what to expect. All the orthopedic surgeons are Certified in their field. Finally, going through education and rehabilitation with other patients creates a supportive atmosphere.

To earn the Gold Seal, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers. The program is evaluated through an assessment of a program's processes, the program's ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.

"This certification means Baptist Health System does the right things and does them well for knee and hip replacement patients," says Jean E. Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, Joint Commission.

"Baptist Health System voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation to enhance the safety and quality of care we provide," says Graham Reeve, President and Chief Executive Officer of Baptist Health System. "It's part of our effort to live our mission of helping people achieve health for life through compassionate service inspired by faith."
